Comparison of techniques between Cezanne's "Six Bathers" and Matisse's "Music"

Image
Matisse's 1910 "Music" seems to have been influenced by Cézanne's "Six Bathers". Techniques cannot be explained in words. Just as one might explain music using sheet music, I will explain it logically using an idealized model. Humans are born with the ability to perceive shapes. Additionally, they possess the innate capacity to manipulate these shapes, constructing more complex networks and enabling logical through shapes.  This natural aptitude is referred to as visual grammar, which serves as the foundation for all cognitive activities.  Consequently, visual grammar can be regarded as universal.   Cézanne took up mundane motifs such as still Lifes and bathing scenes, and created paintings at the level of visual grammar.   In my previous blog, "Cezanne aimed to completely design shapes" I made two models. The arc model shows that all lines can be created using only limited circular arcs, which   creates an effect of harmony. ...

Recently, the Copilot icon has appeared on the screen, so I asked who Sharaku was.

Image
Recently, the Copilot icon appeared on my screen,  so I inquired about Sharaku.  response was, "His true identity is believed to be the Noh actor Saito Jurobei, but it has not yet been confirmed."  This answer reflects a level of research comparable Wikipedia.  In reality, a thorough internet search would reveal the actual answer. Sharaku [Toraya Toramaru] arc model arc circle-cross mode on grid Sharaku [Isibe Kinkichi] arc model arc circle-cross mode on grid It is clear that Sharaku is interested not in the actors' expressions but in the network created by their kimonos. Looking at the model, we can remember Shklovsky's theory of art: the content of art is technique. The shape we see is network of arcs, and the effect can be felt by the basic structure of circles. Contemporary artists have lost these techniques. Art can be reproduction. Art is not a commodity but rather images to enjoy seeing and studying the structure. The art of our...

Cezanne aimed to completely design shapes

Image
(I quote from the previous blog.   Tuesday, January 22, 2019) visual grammar (visible grammar): How modern was Cezanne syntactically? A picture usually started for drawing animal and human shapes. The shapes always become simplified. There are several steps in formalization of drawing. The artists' awareness of shape develops like these:   1) A string of line is made of a chain of curves each of which has different            curvature.   2) A curve with a single curvature is an arc.   3) The circles which are the extension of the arcs can be easily adjusted to have balance.   4) The number of circles should be small to be harmonious.   5) The crossing point of the circles is important for balancing.   6) The crossing  point on a line makes unified look.   7)  The unit of a circle and vertical-horizontal diameters makes easier to control the whole balance. It is almost unbelievable that Cez...

compositional device to create harmony and balance in modern art

Image
Modern artists like Arp, Mondrian and Picasso used the same techniques to create harmony and balance. This time I trace back how they rediscovered the a priori grammar. According to Saussure, the words used in everyday life are variations (parole) used by each person and are based on an a priori grammar (langue). This can be applied to the visual grammar of paintings. Most of paintings are parole, and only the masterpieces can be said to reach Langue's level. The circle- cross model on the checkered pattern shown in the previous blog has indicated the highest level of design, which I call the perfect design model. Arp Mondrian Picasso  Matisse's Dance Paintings I and II allow us to compare freely drawn painting and designed painting. It is clear that all the nude figures in Dance II were redrawn in the same manner as the nude figure on the left in Dance I. You can see that the curve has a clear bend and is made up of a limited circular arc. This technique is clearly i...

Art making with aid of AI need to invent a game with a rule like chess

Image
In order to create art with the help of generative AI, a game-like drawing method based on visual grammar must be devised. Most ethnic music can be transcribed into a musical notation system. As Shogi is played by moving the pieces according to the, there is no room for movements that ignore the rules. Modern artists have rediscovered the use of universal drawing methods.  Cézanne drew intuitively, but Mondrian drew consciously based on a drawing method. The painting needs to be classified semiotically. Let me quote classification table from the blog I wrote earlier. Only art of form is universal. Color and tone are optical, and line is tactile. Visual grammar is about network of line which is geometric. I have already written about network. This time about positioning which produce the sense of balance. In the previous blog I showed that Mondrian used regular grid for composition. This time I show that regular grid was also used for the tree series. Mondrian [The trees]  Most...

Hokusai's(Shunro's) ``Shinipan Odorie zukushi'' uses the same technique as the full-body portraits of the late Sharaku period

Image
There is a why Sharaku’s large face portraits(0kuubie) are highly regarded.   When  the face is drawn large, the depiction of facial expressions is emphasized. Ordinary individuals are led to believe that facial expressions constitute essence of art From this perspective, Shaku's later works are often overlooked as being less expressive. When viewed as a whole the entirety of Sharaku's is consistent. The arc-circle models demonstrate that all 145 works by Sharaku possess a distinctive structure Shunro's "Shinpan Odori-e zukushi'' prepares Snaraku"s whole figure portraits. Shunro "Shinpan Odori-e zukushi''  arc-large circle model arc-large circle model They have very similar device as Saraku's "Rokudaime" Saraku' "Rokudaime" The largest circles, are extensions of the slow-cur arcs, form the basic structure. The arc circle models illustrate why each work appears unique.

Conditions for art theory to be science

Image
Genuine art theory should be able to explain all  artworks  using the same principles. Great artworks are made of the same elements that can be distinguished visually. Each hole in the vertical flute, said to be the world's oldest musical instrument, produce a different sound.  A series of different sounds is a melody line. Likewise, a good drawing line is a series of line segments with distinct bents. Lines with different bents are arcs of different circles. You can create a picture structure using circles of different sizes.  This is called an arc-circle model. Any artwork can be expressed as arc circle model.   Philosopher of science Karl Popper defined science as "a scientific theory must be capable of being disproved by experiment (objective data). So far, in  the previous blog  I have shown numerous examples (objective data): how all masterpieces are created with the same method based on visual grammar: ancient Greek vase painting...
