Matisse's designed drawings

Image
Matisse "Fairy in a Luminous Hat" This is one of Matisse's most designed works. There is no trace of personal touch. Though the pattern is almost symmetrical, some asymmetrical parts can be easily seen. Make an arc model.      Matisse "Fairy in a Luminous Hat" arc-circle model In the model the asymmetrical parts are recognized as shape difference. The next drawing looks more freely drawn.      Matisse "Study for The Virgin" Right cheek, left chin, nose bridge, etc. appear to have the same curvature. The wavy hair on the top of the head also looks like the same curve is used repeatedly. Make an arc model. Matisse "Study for The Virgin" arc-circle model The basic structure is mostly made up of large purple circles, smaller  circles linking them to the structure.

Matisse's drawing method can be understood well by looking at the works in the series

I searched for “Matisse drawing face” and found three pictures of the same model. The work on the left has an explanation:   Henri Matisse (1869-1954), Étude pour la vierge "tête voilée"(Study for the Virgin "veiled head"). The drawings made for the lithograph are highly complete. It must have been drawn with the same technique.  When the size of the paper is the same, they look like Matisse used circles of the same size.   The faces look different in size. But as the geometric shape they are made of the same circles. Matisse was considered as a modern artist while maintaining a figurative image. Being formal and being concrete are not contradictory. A prerequisite is that the art form is structural. The illustration-like works that have been popular recently are all lacking structural interest. The art world is invaded by groups seeking rights and interests. The essence of art is the image, and it is becoming completely free of monetary value as d...

Sharaku's lost drawings of sumo-wrestlers

Image
As I lost the editing page for blogger, I rewrite about [lost drawings by Sharaku]. visual grammar (visible grammar): [Who is Sharaku?] Ⅷ syntactic device can Identify who painted (yukihiko-ikumori.blogspot.com)   Nine block copies of ” Sumo-e" by Sharaku have been neglected. They exist only as photographs because they are lost by the Great kanto Earthquake. Besides some people think they are fakes. This time I made better models for [Raiden Kachoyama].                       Sharaku    [Raiden Kachoyama] 1794-5 Ordinal people who see a picture as illustration fail to enjoy this masterpiece as the main motif is the clothes.                       arc model         arc-circle model There are two ingenious devices. The same circle is used to make the stripe pattern of the left person's kimono and the outline of the r...

Harmonious scale in Matisse's Pink Nude (new version)

Image
(I wrote " Harmonious scale in Matisse's Pink nude "before. As I lost the editing page, I rewrite the first part with better illustrations.) As the taste judgement can recognize a masterpiece immediately, there is no difficulty to find interesting works among ever increasing digital images. I expect that making structural model can help to think why great artworks look so distinctly attractive. The principle of visual grammar is that redrawing the same shape repeatedly makes the lines more smoothly like a chain of arcs. Here is a good example of such case.  Matisse spent almost six months to paint Pink Nude and twenty-two photos were taken for each session. Matisse "Pink Nude" and the first version Firstly I make the circle-arc model of the final painting. There are eight pivots (8 intersections of more than three circles). Five circles are enough to make the whole structure. Here is a concentric circle model. The diagram shows that the circles have very dist...
