My daily image search for Matisse's drawings reveals that there is a mixture of casually drawn pieces and well-balanced pieces, but they are easily distinguishable with taste judgement. I can guess that this to be carefully crafted. Harmony can be achieved by using only arcs of a limited number of circles, and balance can be adjusted by bundling those circles together.
