Cezanne aimed to completely design shapes

visual grammar (visible grammar): How modern was Cezanne syntactically?

A picture usually started for drawing animal and human shapes.
The shapes always become simplified.
There are several steps in formalization of drawing.
The artists' awareness of shape develops like these:
  1) A string of line is made of a chain of curves each of which has different            curvature.
  2) A curve with a single curvature is an arc.
  3) The circles which are the extension of the arcs can be easily adjusted to have balance.
  4) The number of circles should be small to be harmonious.
  5) The crossing point of the circles is important for balancing.
  6) The crossing point on a line makes unified look.

  7)  The unit of a circle and vertical-horizontal diameters makes easier to control the whole balance.

It is almost unbelievable that Cezanne invented such device.
But any design develops in the same way.
The process can be called embellishment of design.
The syntax is the device for embellishing a design.
Refining the design of a picture is making it ornamental.
This process can be seen in any style of artifact.
There is no difference between artist and artisan.
They use the same syntax.             

 It might be added here that when a quadrilateral as picture Plaine encircles the entire shape, it becomes easier to balance all of the shapes if the quadrilateral is divided in a checkerboard pattern.

Just as music is written on a musical staff and chess is played on a checkerboard, all artistic creation becomes the same game.

Arp demonstrated his achievement of perfect design by creating a model which I call circle cross model on grid.

His idea must have been the result of an analysis of Cezanne's works.

Cezanne reached the level of an almost perfect model.

Since a perfect model can be created based on any picture, we will call it the ideal design model.

Only eight circles can reconstruct the composition.


The largest circles are responsible for the basic structure.

Cezanne rediscovered the universal method.

     Koryusai on the left  Harunobu on the right I found a work that imitate Harunobu's "Gojorei" by Koryusai, who is said to be a follower of Harunobu.   It is well known  that it is based on Harunobu's work [Gojounorei] . An AI robot with no artistic appreciation ability can mechanically select works that are harmonious and balanced.

  My daily image search for Matisse's drawings reveals that  there is a mixture of casually drawn pieces and well-balanced pieces, but they are easily distinguishable with taste judgement. The latter type is often lithograph. Recently I found something a little unfamiliar.      Henri Matisse, Plate 153. Florilège des Amours de Ronsard, 1948 At first glance, their hairstyles are almost same and they are facing right but they are different in size. The two shapes are just barely on the right,  so it looks like Matisse is trying for best one profile, but if you look closely, it's a pretty well-balanced composition. I can guess that this to be carefully crafted.   Harmony can be achieved by using only arcs of a limited number of circles, and balance can be adjusted by bundling those circles together.  Only a limited number of artists who know about this technique are already using it.  Conversely, an AI robot without artistic appreciat...

Picasso "Female Nude with Arms Raised"　1907 in the Sainsbury Collection ; more interesting than Les Demoiselles D’Avignon

In the previous blog "Cézanne, Seurat and Beardsley arrived at the same technique", I wrote two conditions of modern art from the level of formalism: Constructing with only arcs of a few circles of different sizes creates harmony. Then the circles can be used to create a balanced structure. 　    Picasso “Female Nude with Arms Raised” 　 1907 in the Sainsbury Collection    Picasso “Female Nude with Arms Raised” 　 arc-circle model According to the explanation of the museum that owns this work, it is a study for Les Demoiselles D'Avignon, But if you look at the work itself 、 this painting is more complete.
