Matisse used paper cutouts to paint ” Pink Nude“.
I have previously written about the work-in-progress photographs of *Pink Nude*. (See my blog post: "Harmonious scale in Matisse's Pink Nude]
Because the available images were not very clear, I originally created an "arc model" using eleven types of circles.
Having now found a clearer image, I have constructed a new model.
It can be created using only six types of circles.
It is evident that the shapes were drawn using templates.
The production method—which relies on the use of uniform curves with consistent curvature—is even more clearly apparent here than it is in the painting *Dance II.
I made the overall design using five types of circular templates.
The use of only five curves make harmony.
I made models by enlarging both the initial version and the final design.
The structure that
the red circles meet at a single point creates balance.
It is evident
that the yellow green of the largest circle help to balance the composition as
a whole.
Creating harmony with arcs of five circles, while employing a large circle to
establish balance—this is a technique learned from Cézanne.
Only early modern artists like Picasso, Matisse and Klee etc. deserve to be called modern after Cezanne.
